What Prospect is built from
North-east along US 42 into Oldham County, on the ridges and ravines above Harrods Creek: subdivisions built from the 1970s through the 1990s and beyond, most of them on sloping sites, which is why so many of these houses have a walk-out lower level with a sump pit and a pump sitting in it.
Family households, a lot of finished lower levels doing duty as the real living space, and rugs on floors that are partly below grade on at least one side.
The Prospect problem
Prospect’s failure is a frozen discharge line, and it only happens in a market that gets a proper freeze. A sump pump pushes water out through a pipe that runs above ground for its last stretch, and in a hard freeze that pipe ices closed from the outlet backwards. The pump then runs against a blocked line, the pit fills, and the water comes over the top of it onto a lower-level floor — usually during the same mid-winter thaw that is putting the most water into the ground in the first place. It happens at night, it happens while the house is asleep, and what is in it matters as much as how much of it there is: that water has been through soil, around a foundation, and through a pit that has been standing since the last time the pump ran. A wool rug that took it is a decontamination job. Drying the top of it with the furnace running does not solve anything — it moves the problem down into the foundation where it cannot be smelled for a month.
