What Glenview is built from
The bluff above the Ohio between Brownsboro Road and the river, laid out from the turn of the twentieth century: large Colonial Revival, Georgian and Tudor houses on wooded acreage, with wide south and west elevations built to take the view down over the river, and a mature deciduous canopy over all of it.

The Glenview problem
The damage in Glenview is light, and it is a winter problem because of what the trees do. From May to October a full canopy and a high sun keep the floor of a south-facing room in shade. Then the leaves come down, the sun drops to a low winter angle, and light comes in under the eaves onto a band of floor that has been shaded for six months — often four or five feet further into the room than the summer sun ever reaches. That band takes direct low-angle sun for the whole heating season, and low sun through bare branches is far stronger at floor level than anyone expects it to be. Madder red and indigo go first, and because the angle barely changes for months the result is a hard-edged stripe rather than a general softening. It is irreversible, it is the thing we are asked to correct most often and can only partly rebuild, and the fix is entirely preventative: turn the rug end for end in October, when the fade season here actually starts, rather than in June when it does not.
