What Crescent Hill is built from
North of Frankfort Avenue around the reservoir and the water tower, built between about 1890 and 1930: brick and frame bungalows, four-squares and larger Victorian houses on generous lots, basements under most of them, and original hardwood through the living space.

The Crescent Hill problem
The peculiar Crescent Hill complaint is a rug that goes grey all over rather than dirty where it is walked on, and it is a winter problem. In a house sitting at fifteen per cent relative humidity nothing dissipates a static charge — not the wool, not the air, not the floor underneath — so a wool rug in January holds a standing charge that the same rug in July cannot hold at all. Fine airborne dust that would otherwise settle and be vacuumed away is pulled onto the pile and held against it electrostatically, and it is held down among the fibres rather than sitting on top where a vacuum can reach it. The rug loses contrast evenly, month by month, and because there are no traffic lanes to point at, most people never connect it to anything and simply decide the colours were always like that. It comes out in immersion, where the fibre is wetted and the charge stops existing. It does not come out of a vacuum, however many passes you make.
