What Cherokee Triangle is built from
The wedge between Bardstown Road, Cherokee Road and Cherokee Parkway, running down to Olmsted’s Cherokee Park. Large Victorian, Queen Anne and Colonial Revival houses from the 1890s through the 1920s on narrow deep lots, a fair number divided into two or three flats, with on-street parking and brick or stone steps up from the sidewalk.
Settled, house-proud and heavily walked — this is a neighborhood where people leave the car and go up to Bardstown Road on foot. Good rugs are common, and most of them are lying in an entry hall or a front room within ten feet of the front door.
The Cherokee Triangle problem
This is a salt neighborhood, and it is nothing like sea salt. From the first freeze to the last, the streets and the sidewalks take sodium chloride, calcium chloride and magnesium chloride, usually mixed with grit, and all of it comes indoors on the sole of a boot. Two separate things then happen to the rug by the door. The crystals are hard and angular, and once they have worked down to the base of the pile they cut wool the way any other abrasive does, from below, where nobody sees it. And the residue that dissolves is hygroscopic in a way ordinary table salt is not — calcium and magnesium chloride pull water out of the air at humidities where sodium chloride does nothing at all — so a rug that took a winter of it holds damp at the base of the pile through the following summer, long after the white bloom on the surface has been vacuumed away. The bloom is the part people notice and the least important part of it. Nothing sprayed on top removes chloride; it has to be dissolved out in immersion, and an entry rug in this neighborhood wants that every spring rather than every other year.
If that sounds like your rug, send the form and describe what you are seeing. We will tell you whether it needs the full treatment or not.
