What Anchorage is built from
A separately incorporated city about twelve miles east of downtown, laid out along the old railroad and interurban line: large lots, long private drives, and houses running from 1870s and 1880s frame and brick originals through 1920s estates to substantial later infill. Much of it is on well and septic rather than city services, and the roads are deliberately dark and unkerbed.
Established, private, and frequently away — these are households that travel, and a house here can stand empty for a fortnight in January without anything looking different from the road.
The Anchorage problem
Anchorage is where we see burst supply lines, and the mechanism belongs to a cold market. A pipe in an outside wall, in an unheated crawl or in a garage ceiling freezes, expands and splits — and nothing at all comes out while it is still frozen. The water arrives on the thaw, hours or days later, and it arrives under mains pressure, so a rug two rooms away can be standing in water long before anybody is in the house to hear it. Behind a gate at the end of a long drive, that delay is measured in days rather than hours. What it does to wool is not complicated: a saturated foundation in a heated house is a growing medium, and dye that would never move in a controlled wash will move when it sits wet under a furniture leg over a weekend. The second thing here is the drive itself. Gravel and cinder drives shed a hard, pale, fine grit that walks straight into the house, and out here it does not stop at the door mat, because the door mat is fifty feet from where the car actually stops.
