What Middletown is built from
The old turnpike village on Shelbyville Road, with a handful of nineteenth-century buildings still at its centre and a very large surround of 1970s to 2000s subdivision housing, most of it two-storey on slab or crawl, with a garage entry and a mud room doing considerably more work than it was designed for.

The Middletown problem
Middletown is where we see wool felted rather than worn, and the cause is the wet-dry cycle a Louisville winter puts an entry rug through. Snow and slush come in on boots, the rug takes it, the furnace dries it out over the next few hours, and then it happens again the following morning — thirty or forty times between December and March. Wool fibres are covered in overlapping scales, and wetting them, warming them and then working them mechanically is precisely how felt is made: the scales interlock and they do not come apart afterwards. That is why an entry rug in these houses goes hard, dense and matted in a patch a yard across while the rest of the rug is perfectly fine, and why brushing it achieves nothing. Wet wool is also considerably weaker than dry wool, so every one of those mornings is abrading a fibre at its most vulnerable, with road grit lying in the pile at the same time. Catching it early matters — matting can often be opened up again in a proper wash, and once the fibres have fully locked, it cannot.
